A Doula is...
A Doula ‘mothers the mother’.
She will assist you and your partner in preparing and carrying out your plans for the birth of your child. A Doula also provides continuous support and comfort measures during labor and delivery.
A Doula will assist you during the postpartum period with knowledgeable, nurturing care for you and your newborn baby. This includes breastfeeding support, emotional support and referrals to additional services.
A Doula also helps you understand your options and will provide you with the necessary information to make the best decisions for you and your new baby.
In over 15 years of worldwide research women supported by a Doula during labor have been shown to have:
• 50% reduction of caesarean rate
• 25% shorter labor
• 60% reduction in epidural requests
• 30% reduction in analgesia use
• 40% reduction in forceps delivery
Having a Doula also increases the father’s confidence during labor to better fulfil his vital role.
All our Doulas have been trained by Nurturing Birth and/or Dona International.
